NOTE: Here is just one of many reports on the consumer interest of XPress lid by SmartCup.

Was excited to see a neat little bit of news about innovation in the coffee world in Darren Barefoot’s blog the other day – it’s the SmartCup Xpress Lid.  You order coffee and get a disposable/recyclable lid, rod and press – ta-da – single-use french press coffee where ever you are.

Darren says the cups were given out at the recent Gnomedex technology conference. There’s a great example of a company hitting their target market head-on – perpetual caffeine-seekers who love new gizmos.

Would you try it? I sure would.

Gnomedex Members Are Caring XPress Lids on Their Back

SmartCup is showcasing our XPress Lid technology to caffeine-starved technologists at the Gnomedex conference. We will be updating from the conference.

Gnomedex is a single-track technology conference hosted by Chris Pirillo, the owner of Lockergnome, LLC and is produced by Chris Pirillo and his staff at Lockergnome. Pirillo was the co-host of the show Call For Help on the former cable television channel TechTV. Gnomedex started as an outgrowth of Pirillo’s technology newsletters, IRC channel and web site.

The conference name is a satirical portmanteau of Pirillo’s Lockergnome and the now-defunct Comdex technology trade show, which was a massive and influential annual event at the time of the first Gnomedex conference.

The coffee lid business is booming.

Another must-have soldier accessory must now be added to Camelback canteens: disposable French press coffee lids.

“A lot of deployed servicemen were e-mailing me, ‘We’re trying to get a good cup of coffee off the hood of a Humvee,’ ” says Forrest Graves, a roaster in Cleveland, Ga.

Graves knew just what to send them—the Xpress Lid. Made by SmartCup, the Xpress Lid incorporates a plastic strainer and plunger that transforms humdrum paper cups into disposable, single-use plunger pots. SmartCup sells to specialty shops and java enthusiasts for about 40 cents each. The lids are already making inroads in the Middle East.

“We started shipping it to troops,” Graves says.
